about
Formality is a song written and recorded by Michael Hulstein of the band Ojai. The song was written in a matter of hours on a day he was held up in his home with the flu. A song that harkens back to a theme in many of Ojai’s lyrics of social anxiety, codependency and un resolved mental dilemmas. Using nothing but Michael’s computer keyboard he played a keyboard melody and sang into his built in speakers on the MacBook he was using which are the original vocals used in the song. Later adding the drums, bass, and marimba.
lyrics
People stare when you walk in the room
Chances are they're just scared of you
Not a fan so they call the police
No way to treat your family
Just a formality
Something to keep in mind
Just a formality
we shouldn't be so kind
My friends are scared about the ways things have been turning out
And so am I
I hide my face every time I come around
No one seems to mind
Are you mad at me?
Always on my mind
Just a formality
Something to keep in mind
